you should write it down

George Herbert Mead distinguishes what he calls the “me” from what he calls the “I.” The “me” is what others treat me as and how I am represented. The “I” is the inner self. During summer, I was writing a lot in my journal, and it made me want to explore this idea of the ‘I’ and inner consciousness, and I thought by creating a photo-book, it would replicate the idea of a diary. I collected snippets of my own and my friends diaries, including my mum's from when she was 12. I asked people to send me either sentences or words that stood out to them and are personally relevant to them, even if it isn’t obvious what it’s about. If not specific, I wanted the sentences I chose to be ambiguous and open to interpretation so the reader has the option to come up with their own meanings that are relevant to them. All the images I used were shot on film.
